MALTESE LONG HAIR CARE

MALTESE LONG HAIR CARE

The Maltese Bichon's hair is very fine and if we don't take care of it, it is easy for it to break or get tangled. It does not have a sub-hair, therefore we will not see its hairs throughout the house. The Maltese Bichon can wear its hair long or short but you must know that you should never shear a Maltese Bichon as its skin is very delicate and it would run the risk of getting sick.
Each one has a specific size and morphology that will condition us to make a different cut or arrangement with each one, but there is something that they all have in common: the need to spend time every day taking care of their hair.

In this article we will list the keys to maintain the coat of these dogs, so that they always look spectacular.

1. They must be brushed every day.
Ideally, all dogs should be brushed at least once a day as this removes dirt and makes their hair shine. In the case of long-haired dogs, this is a necessity since their hair is more prone to knotting and if they are not untangled in time, it is possible that the only solution we have is to cut it. On the other hand, leaves, twigs, and any other undesirable element that we can easily detect and remove with timely brushing are likely to adhere to their hair, especially if it touches the ground.
The walk is the time of greatest activity for our dog, which means that the greatest number of knots will be made during it. For this reason, the right time to brush it is always after the walk.

2. The right tools for every dog.
Every dog needs a different brush for their hair.
For cleaning it is advisable to use a brush with natural bristles that will remove surface dirt and to untangle a brush with round bristles as it will prevent the hair from breaking and will not damage its delicate skin.

3. Always avoid knots
When dealing with a dog whose hair tends to tangle, we should try to avoid knots as much as possible. Not only are they unsightly and bothersome to the touch, but they also pose a risk to our pet. Knots are areas that are very prone to accumulating dirt and moisture, this can cause serious dermatitis and be a possible source of parasites. In addition, if they are not taken care of and the knot becomes large, it can end up causing our dog jerks and therefore pain. This is where the importance of brushing resides, since we will avoid knots and therefore we will gain in hygiene and health. For this reason, we must pay special attention to the areas below the ears, bloomers (rear) and skirt, which is where the most knots tend to be created.

4. Weekly ear cleaning.
Long-haired dogs tend to accumulate hair on the inside of their ears as well. This is a natural mechanism of your body to defend itself against possible foreign bodies that can get into your ears, however it can also cause a greater amount of earwax and a greater accumulation of dirt due to the lack of perspiration caused by the hair. For this reason we must maintain a strict hearing hygiene routine if we want to avoid possible otitis or other hearing problems.

5. vitamins for your hair
Food is key when it comes to maintaining our pet's hair. A natural and quality product is the base for beautiful hair, which will be strong and will fall out less at home.

6. Grooming in hairdresser every month.
Both due to the tendency to get tangled and dirty, as well as due to continuous brushing, long-haired dogs usually have a very punished coat since it is constantly handled. For this reason, a monthly hairdressing session is recommended where they thoroughly untangle it and apply balms that relax the skin and rehydrate and restructure the hair fiber of our dog.
